What to Wear for Family Pictures (Without Looking Too Matchy)

What to Wear for Family Photos (Without Looking Too Matchy)

Choosing outfits for family photos doesn't have to be stressful. The goal isn't for everyone to wear the exact same thing—it's to create a look that feels natural, timeless, and lets your family's personalities shine.

Here are my favorite tips to help you look your best.

Choose Colors That Complement Each Other

Instead of matching everyone in white shirts and jeans, choose a color palette that works together. Think of coordinating rather than matching.

Some of my favorite color combinations include:

  • Cream, tan, and sage green

  • Navy, cream, and dusty blue

  • Rust, mustard, and olive

  • Soft blush, beige, and gray

  • Earth tones with denim accents

These colors photograph beautifully in Northern California's landscapes throughout the year.

Start with One Outfit You Love

If you're feeling overwhelmed, start with one person's outfit—usually Mom's. Once you've found something you feel confident wearing, build everyone else's outfits around those colors.

When Mom feels comfortable and confident, it shows in the final images.

Avoid Large Logos and Busy Patterns

Large graphics, brand logos, neon colors, and busy patterns can pull attention away from what matters most—your family.

Simple textures, subtle prints, and solid colors create a much more timeless look.

Think About the Location

Your outfits should complement your surroundings.

  • Apple Hill: Earth tones, cozy sweaters, boots.

  • River locations: Soft blues, creams, light neutrals.

  • Open fields: Warm neutrals, sage, rust, denim.

  • Downtown sessions: Dressier outfits with clean lines and classic colors.

Choosing clothing that fits the environment helps create a cohesive final gallery.

Add Texture

Texture adds depth without overwhelming the photo.

Consider:

  • Knit sweaters

  • Linen dresses

  • Layered cardigans

  • Denim jackets

  • Flowy skirts

  • Scarves during cooler months

These details photograph beautifully and add visual interest.

Coordinate Shoes

Shoes matter more than most people realize.

Whenever possible, avoid athletic shoes with bright colors. Neutral boots, simple flats, sandals, loafers, or clean dress shoes help complete the look.

Dress for Comfort

If you're uncomfortable, it'll show in your expressions.

Choose clothing that fits well, allows you to move easily, and makes you feel like yourself. Family sessions include walking, cuddling, sitting, and playing, so comfort is important.

Don't Forget the Little Details

A few things to consider before your session:

  • Remove smart watches if you don't want them in your photos.

  • Empty bulky items from pockets.

  • Steam or iron clothing ahead of time.

  • Trim fingernails if they'll be visible in close-up images.

  • Avoid last-minute haircuts the day before your session.

Need Help Choosing?

One of the perks of working with Christina Hartnell Photography is that you're never on your own. I'm happy to help you coordinate outfits, review photos of clothing choices, or suggest color combinations that work well with your chosen location.

My goal is to make the entire experience feel easy—from planning your session to creating artwork you'll love seeing on your walls for years to come.
